Clay "stones" and sculpted walnut wood frame this graceful mirror. Each clay stone is pit-fired with lichen and blue colored glazes. The design of this mirror was inspired by drifting wood, stone, and leaf. Ready to hang.

Jan Jacque

"Through my work in clay and wood, I try to express my deep admiration and concern for nature."

Jan Jacque begins her process of creation with a walk in the woods. After gathering fallen branches and stones, she hauls them back to her studio, where she studies the form each suggests. The shape of an interesting stick determines the form the clay will take to complement it.

All of Jacque's pieces are handbuilt from fine-textured white clay. Using both slab and coil building methods of construction, she slowly adapts the clay to fit the wood. In the final stages of both methods, she paddles, scrapes, and sands the pieces until very smooth; they are then airbrushed with colorants and pit fired. A long, complex process, but the results are well worth the effort.

Absolutely stunning
We placed the mirror in the foyer by our front door. It's simply stunning. Very well constructed, easy to hang and beautiful.

Color not true
The piece is beautiful, but the red color is not very red. I expected it to much more vibrant and it is yellow based so near orange and very muted. Additionally, my understanding was that the side piece was colored (red) glass. Obviously the description now says it is driftwood. Perhaps the product or description changed as others I had consulted before I ordered expected glass as well.
