Nancy Pollock
"For me, mosaic is solving a puzzle of color and texture mathematically, but it must hold a story with sense of whimsy and make me smile."
Ms. Pollock believes that her mosaics draw on the tension between large forms and surface details that are small and often precious. The challenge is to join the form and content to create an emotional experience. The final form of the art can be simultaneously cold to the touch as glass or stone and yet deep and warm in its color and texture.
Simple, practical forms can become spirited and personal enhanced by mosaic. Every piece Ms. Pollock creates is a one-of-a-kind making customized work to fit specific need is easily part of her process. Some work is based completely on the beauty of the tile while others expand upon the original shape to create what is virtually a combination of sculpture and furniture.
Ms. Pollock's design career began with study and apprenticeship as a master weaver. Her woven tapestries evolved into couture fashion. Her sweaters and coats were included in the collections of Mary McFadden and Michael Vollbracht which both received Coty Awards. As a self-trained mosaic artist, Ms. Pollock's work reflects the same sense of design, color and texture that she learned in fiber.
