"The past is with me every day. As a child, I spent time with my grandmother in her dress shop. Today I revisit those memories while I make my textured porcelain teapots."

Laura Peery draws inspiration from the dress shop her grandmother once owned in New Orleans. As a young girl, she spent hours in the alterations department, fascinated by the scraps of fabric, colorful threads and tailoring tools. When working in clay, she often returns to feelings of wonder – composing teapots resembling fabrics of multiple textures, prints and colors.

Peery works with ultra-fine clay, which shows textures extremely well. She rolls fabrics such as canvas and lace onto the clay surface, then cuts, shapes and assembles each piece as if from a dressmaker’s pattern. Color, applied in all stages of the forming process, accentuates the textures. As a finishing touch, the artist makes roses from polymer clay, adding color contrast and an additional bit of delicate whimsy.

Lace Collar Teapot is Wonderful

Yesterday I received Laura Peery's fabulous "Lace Collar Teapot" and it was certainly worth waiting for. Ceramic artists do not fire their work one piece at a time so more often than not, when you order a work, you will have to wait a while to receive it. I actually didn't wait long at all for this glorious teapot. I'm just thrilled with it. It's impeccably crafted and the scale is absolutely perfect. Although smaller than many other artworks in my living room (8 3/8" high x 5" wide x 2 3/4" deep), "Lace Collar" has so much character and personality that it commands immediate attention.I live in New Jersey, which has not experienced earthquakes of any significance; however, since I'm extremely risk averse, I tacked down "Lace Collar" to the table it occupies with easily removable Museum Wax (just Google "Museum Wax"). I also tacked down the top of the teapot to the body of the piece. This prevents careless hands from doing damage.Work such as Laura Peery's enhances people's lives. I'd be happy to have any of her pieces.
