The primitive horse design on this blown glass vase was inspired by the running horse petroglyphs drawn in Lascaux Cave France, circa 15000 BC. The rich gold color of the background is created by layering and interfacing several colors of glass powder,
frit, and
stringer. The horse images are "drawn" in powdered glass on a steel plate and gently heated from beneath. Once the background colors of the piece have been established, the glass is
blown into a cylindrical shape and rolled over the powdered images of the horse. The warm powder images embed into the surface of the hot glass creating a softly textured finished piece. The final step is to
iridize the surface with a technique adopted from the studios of the early 1900's.
